Twix Trifles

One of the great “injustices” of my childhood was having to stand in line at the grocery store, with Twix bars and their gorgeous gold wrappers just inches away, calling my name. But despite my puppy-dog eyes, my pleas, my attempts at rationalizing the situation (because everyone in our family knows that Twix are her favorite candy bars too!)….my mom always held to her strict no-candy-in-the-checkout-line policy. Oh, the defeat!!

But now, the joys of being the adult with the credit card are mine. (Mwahaha…)  So on occasion, I take great delight in spontaneously tossing one into my cart. And now, I take oh-so-great delight in introducing my first Twix recipe on the blog! It also happens to be the first of four original recipes I have been asked to develop for the Real Women of Philadelphia — a rockin’ contest hosted by Paula Dean celebrating amazing PHILADELPHIA brand cream cheese and cooking creme recipes. I’ve followed the contest the past two seasons, so am super excited to be a part this year along with these other bloggers!

The RWOP contest is closed for this year but the finalists have been chosen and the winners will be announced at The Cookoff & Live Event in Savanna, Georgia on June 30th (visit the site for all the details.)

So of course, while brainstorming in (of all places) the checkout line one day, the little gold wrapper called my name again and I had the idea for these delicious Twix trifles. They are super-simple — just a layer of Twix, followed by a delicious salted caramel mousse, followed by some chocolate fudge sauce, and topped with whipped cream. Basically, heaven in a trifle bowl. :)

So read on below for the recipe, visit the RWOP site to check out the finalists’ recipes, and see what great ideas you can find.

Description

A simple, delicious Twix Trifles recipe with layers of chocolate candy bar salted caramel mousse, hot fudge and whipped cream. YUM!

Ingredients

Scale

Trifle Ingredients:

  • Twix bars (I used 3 packages, chopped into 1/4″ pieces)
  • chocolate fudge sauce (homemade or storebought)
  • whipped cream (homemade or storebought)
  • salted caramel mousse (recipe below)

Salted Caramel Mousse Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. water
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt (or more, to taste)
  • 4 oz. PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

To Make Trifle:

  1. In a trifle bowl or small glass, add a layer of the chopped Twix bars. Then use a pastry bag (or a Ziplock bag with the corner tip cut out) to pipe in a layer of caramel mouse. Then do the same with a layer of chocolate fudge sauce. Then repeat! Finish of with a layer of whipped cream, and top with the remaining Twix bars. Serve immediately or refrigerate up to 8 hours.

To Make Salted Caramel Mousse:

  1. Briefly stir together granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan, then bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Continue cooking, without stirring, until mixture turns dark amber in color, about 6 to 7 minutes. (Keep an eye on it, though, because it goes from clear to amber very quickly!)
  2. Remove from heat and slowly add in cream (just start with a tablespoon or two), stirring with a wooden spoon until completely smooth. (Be careful, as the mixture will definitely bubble up and possibly splatter a bit as you add in the cream.) Stir in vanilla and salt. Set aside until it reaches room temperature, or refrigerate to speed up the process.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese on medium-high speed for 1 minute until very smooth. Add in the room-temperature caramel and powdered sugar, and beat on medium-low speed until combined. If the mousse is too thick, add in a tablespoon or two of heavy cream. Then increase speed to medium-high and beat for another 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Set aside.

Notes

These would also be delicious with a layer of ice cream!

  2. You’ll be the death of my detox. Twix: the ultimate weakness.

  4. This looks amazing!! I’ve never made a trifle, but I just might have to try this one!

  5. As the afore-mentioned mean Mom, I can’t wait to try these!!!

  6. Wow, look at that! I’m such a sucker for a Twix bar (I love biting off the caramel/chocolate and then munching on the cookie) — this thing might put me over the edge.

  7. This looks great, Ali! I can’t wait to see the others that you came up with!

  8. oh MY! i can’t decide if i should go the ice cream route or the trifle route. incredible recipe!

  9. Ohhhhh yum. I just made a trifle the other day, but it was far more basic than this one. I’m going to give the excuse that I made it with a 10 year old so it had to be simple. But THIS. LOOKS. DELICIOUS. I can’t wait to try it!

  10. Oh, we love Twix! This looks amazing!!!!! Can’t wait to try it!

  11. That must be delicious ! It’s look amazing.. :) I love it !

  12. I love that you didn’t skimp on the Twix pieces! This looks sooooo yummy!

  13. mmm, this looks so scrumptious! how did you manage to make that mousse, I am in awe!

  14. my kids loved it

  15. I made this because I, too, love Twix. I must have a huge trifle bowl because I had to double my chocolate syrup recipe and the caramel mousse. I used 4 packages of 8 fun size twix (they were on sale). Everyone loved it. Thanks for sharing.

  16. I love Twix! So this definitely looks amazing! I want I want! :)

  17. This looks like pure deliciousness, salted caramel and twix are two of my biggest weaknesses will be making this for an upcoming birthday weekend, so I won’t be as tempted to just sit with the trifle bowl in my lap and eat it all myself.

  18. I can’t wait to make these.

  19. Hey there! I tried this today, it was delicious but I would put something with a different consistency in it next time, like some sort of cake or something crunchy in the layers since it is a really soft consistency. But very yummy! Very easy!

  20. OMG this was amazing! I love making desserts and this one is a favorite!

  21. Can I make the mousse the night ahead and put trifle together the next morning? I want to take this for christmas dinner but don’t want to spend the morning cooking.

  22. This is not fun to make…I am on my 3rd attempt to make. I cant get the mousse to fluff at all. So thinking about dumping the 3rd batch as well. NOT easy at all…going to unpin this one for sure.

  23. Oh my gosh. Made this for New Years day. Super easy and, unbelievably delicious!!!

  24. My husband and I made a version of this trifle for a company party last night and it was an absolute hit. The salted caramel mousse came out more like a slightly fluffy caramel sauce rather than a mousse, but it didn’t matter because it tasted fantastic. We modified the overall recipe a bit by adding two layers of chocolate cake pieces, two layers of chocolate mousse, and using the Twix bars as a layer in the middle.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! It has definitely made its way into my dessert repertoire.

  25. Help! I’m having troubles with the mousse. It is really runny. Can you tell me what I’ve done wrong. I need some advice. thanks!!!

  26. I couldn’t get the carmel mousse to work so I added vanilla pudding to the mixture. Then I put a layer of vanilla ice cream. It was really yummy!!!

  27. The caramel mousse is amazing. Thank you, thank you.

  28. I made this for my husband’s birthday in January, but it was too rich for him and he is a chocolate LOVER!!! However, I have decided to turn the mousse into a frosting.

  29. This was SO good. I did change a couple of things. I made dark chocolate brownies and used that instead of the pure chocolate sauce layer. But I did generously drizzle them with hot fudge sauce. I did have to double everything to fit my bowl, so I don’t know if this is an individual trifle bowl recipe. I also made my own whipped cream and with the twix on top I drizzled caramel over it. It was beautiful and oh so good. I keep finding myself sneaking leftovers when no one is looking.

  30. I made this recipe and although very good the recipe had to be tripled.. Unless I have a VERY large trifle dish the one serving did not even cover the first layer. I would also recommend using TWO jars of the fudge sauce. I also used 7 packages of Twix bars the 3 packages was not enough.. Hope this comment helps the next person that is going to make this:)

  31. We made this tonight for a small dinner party. Definitely glad we doubled the caramel sauce and probably could have tripled it. We also substituted chocolate pudding for the fudge sauce which lightened it up nicely. I think the next time we make it, we will triple the caramel sauce and for the cream cheese we would do 3 parts cream cheese to 1 part whipped topping to tone down the cream cheese aspect. Then instead of fudge sauce, we would actually love to try it with a milk chocolate based mousse to help it set up even better than having substituted the pudding. If we can find a recipe for some gourmet twix bars, we thought that could be pretty awesome with it too.

Loved your instructions on the caramel sauce, my husband has tried to make caramel a couple of times using a similar method and the instructions have always been worthless. With your instructions though, we were able to master it on the first try. Made for a really fantastic dessert. I can’t wait to try it as leftovers once it has had a chance to chill overnight!

    Final word, YUMMY!!! Thank you!

  32. Awesome!!! I have ALL of these ingredients sitting in my house right now and a party to go to tonight! I know what I will be taking.

Thanks for sharing – I am sure my waistline won’t be thanking me as much though.

  33. I have had this recipe saved for quite sometime now. I always look at it and get excited, but then decide not to make it because I am afraid of the over the top sweetness it might have. I decided yesterday to put my twist on it and make it. Needless to say 5 people ate the whole trifle.
I doubled the caramel recipe then whipped it with the cream cheese, I omitted the powdered sugar all together
I whipped up a pint of heavy whipping cream with 4TB white sugar
After the whipped cream was made I set half of it aside and the other half I folded into the caramel mixture making it very light, airy and mousse like.
I omitted the fudge sauce and substituted the 2c size of Jello Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge pudding mix, made with 2c milk
    So I layered
    Diced brownies
    1/2 caramel mousse
    5 small diced twix
    1/2 chocolate pudding
    1/2 of leftover whipped cream
    Diced brownies
    Other 1/2 caramel
    5 small diced twix
    Other 1/2 chocolate pudding
The rest of the whipped cream on top
2 finely diced twix and some brownie crumbs on top
Al I have to say is OMG! It got better reviews than my trusty Reese’s Trifle that I’ve been making for years. Thanks for the kickstart on this recipe.

    • Thanks for sharing your take on it, Allison! It sounds ridiculous, and we’re definitely taking notes! We’re so glad you had fun with this, and that you enjoyed it!

  34. I made this just now.. I have never made caramel in my life leave alone caramel mousse but it came out like a dream and tasted amazing!!! Overall the only thing i would change is the sweetness even though i reduced about 50grams of the sugar.. it’s an amazing dessert to make for twix lovers like my hubby :).. best part is its surprisingly easy..

    • Yay, we’re so glad you found it easy and that you liked it! And yes, you can certainly cut back on the sugar if you’d like. Thanks for sharing with us Amy! :)
